Willow
Walker is currently 'under transformation' |
| The Willow Walker
has been rescued by the timely intervention
of the Kenneth Miller Trust and Cambridge University
Press. Work is already underway on establishing
it as a social enterprise charity in its own
right. This process will involve a name change,
a city centre base offering new opportunities
for homeless people as well the formal inclusion
of Cambridge
Link-Up (a homeless-led community group)
under the new project's umbrella. What will
not change is the Willow Walker's commitment
to the creative talents, skills and stories
of people who share experiences of homelessness.
Kirsten Lavers, who was the Editor of the Willow
Walker and is the driving force behind the new
vision, said, “Our plan is to publish
a monthly magazine and offer training, studio
space, collaborations, and events. The next
year will see the beginning with a series of
pilot projects. Just watch this space... it’s
going to be an exciting year.”

STOP
PRESS! the new name is ...
|
|
|
Following extensive brainstorming and
discussion, three names were put to a
vote by Willow Walker friends and contributors
as well as residents of 222 & Willow
Walk Hostels, Jimmy’s Nightshelter,
451 Newmarket Rd and people visiting Wintercomfort
Day Centre.
Those who voted were included in a competition
for which the prize was an iTouch donated
by John Lewis. Lee Thomas was the lucky
winner! Lee is a musician and songwriter
and was featured on the Both Sides of
the Tracks album produced by the Willow
Walker in 2008.
|
 |
| FLACK won
and was suggested by a contributor to the
Willow Walker. The new name was chosen because
it was deemed ‘energetic’, ‘catchy,
and has various connotations. The dictionary
definition of flack (the verb) is to publicise
and promote which nicely fits the magazine’s
remit to portray a positive view of homeless
people. Of course there is also the slang
meaning of hostility and abuse which unfortunately
homeless people all too often experience. |
