Welcome to the Willow Walker website on

EDITORIAL POLICY

All articles and artworks on ANY topic written by homeless, ex-homeless or vulnerably housed people will be considered for publication.

Poems are considered alongside an interview or article. Interviews, investigative journalism, life-stories, advice columns, fiction or special interest topics – whatever you’re interested in the Willow Walker is too!

Articles by other contributors will be included if the subject matter is considered particularly relevant to the Willow Walker’s core readership.

Articles can be submitted already written or produced through taped conversation with the editor.

All articles will be edited and authors will receive final draft approval before going to print.

Any article or letter that includes specific criticism of another individual or organisation will be sent to them before publication so that they can have the right to reply within the same issue of the Willow Walker.

The Willow Walker respects the work of its contributors through the token payment of a £20 fee for all articles and artworks (not letters or obituaries) once published.

The magazine is reliant on advertising revenue in order to sustain this policy – please contact editor@willowwalker.org if you are interested in placing an advert at competitive rates.

There are three ways to contribute an ARTICLE or a LETTER to the Willow Walker:

  1. Write it and send it directly via this website
  2. For people living in or near Cambridge, the Willow Walker records an interview with you. This usually takes between 20 and 40 minutes. The Willow Walker then types up and edits the recording. You check the result. If you don’t like it, it doesn’t go in; if you do, it does. 80% of the articles in the magazine are done in this way.
  3. Record yourself on an ordinary cassette tape and send the result to the address below. As above, the Willow Walker will edit the recording and confirm the final copy with you before publication.

POEMS are accepted only if the poet is prepared to talk or write about the work.
PHOTOGRAPHS
, DRAWINGS and CARTOONS are welcome.
ADVERTISEMENTS cost £25 for a quarter page.

All contributions not submitted via this website can be sent to:

From its origins as an in-house Newsletter for ECHG’s hostel at Willow Walk – the Willow Walker has grown over recent years into a popular and free quarterly street magazine for Cambridge. Several articles from the Willow Walker have been subsequently re-published by the Guardian Newspaper and their commitment to the magazine is ongoing.

2000 copies of each issue are distributed to Cambridge Homelessness projects and their neighbours, probation services, city and county councillors, local and copyright libraries and selected city centre cafés, bars, shops and leisure facilities.

The Willow Walker is part of English Churches Housing Group with funding support from Cambridge City Council. The Willow Walker is a non-partisan publication.

ECHG offers affordable and sheltered housing and is increasingly recognised for its pioneering work with homeless people who have alcohol, drugs and mental health problems. This includes housing schemes such as Willow Walk in Cambridge, as well as nationally-recognised pilot projects in cities around the country.
